The PCR test is highly sensitive and specific. Its analytical performance offers increased accuracy and confidence in test results—in fact, it is considered to be the “gold standard” for COVID-19 testing. Our PCR tests are authorized for emergency use (EUA) by the FDA.
PCR tests (also known as nucleic acid amplification tests, or NAATs) and rapid tests (also known as antigen tests) are both viral tests that detect a current infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
PCR tests are sensitive molecular tests that target the detection of three SARS-CoV-2 genes (orf-1ab, S, and N protein target). The viral genetic material can be detected even if you are not experiencing symptoms. The tests are performed in a laboratory and are considered to be the most reliable, especially for patients without symptoms.
While rapid tests provide results in under 30 minutes, they are less reliable, especially for patients without current symptoms. Since one negative rapid test does not completely rule out infection, it may be likely to repeat the test or have a follow-up PCR test to make sure there is no infection.
Patients should take a test if they have symptoms or if they were recently exposed to COVID-19. The patient’s medical provider can let determine the best timing for a test.
If the patient is positive, they will need to follow their provider’s directions for isolating, monitoring symptoms, and notifying individuals that may have been exposed.
If a PCR test is negative and the patient has no symptoms, they can return to normal activities with precautions. If the patient does have symptoms, they may have gotten a test too soon after exposure and will need a repeat test if symptoms don’t improve.
